Carestream acquires x-ray firm Genesis Digital

Carestream Health has acquired Genesis Digital Imaging, a Los Angeles-based digital imaging software developer and systems integrator.

The deal helps Carestream expand its customer base by leveraging Genesis' expertise in serving dealers in the U.S. in the value segment, as well as specialty medical practices. Genesis is a distributor of Carestream's Vita computed radiography (CR) system and integrates its software with the readers, selling the integrated units to more than 120 medical equipment dealers in the U.S.

Carestream sees the acquisition as complementary to its 2010 purchase of Quantum Medical Imaging, a developer of digital and conventional x-ray systems that targets the midtier hospital, orthopedic, and imaging center segments. The Genesis dealer network is largely additive to that of Quantum, and the expanded direct reach with dealers will enable Carestream to provide a better customer experience while minimizing channel conflict, according to Carestream.

Genesis will become part of Carestream's medical business, and its headquarters will remain in Los Angeles. Scott Evers, president of Genesis, will continue overseeing its regional operations. He will also assume the new titles of president of Carestream's Genesis Digital Imaging division and vice president of U.S. and Canada value-tier channels. Evers will report to Doug Spotts, general manager of U.S. and Canada medical sales and service.
