NYC hospital acquires breast cancer IORT system

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center said it has purchased an Intrabeam intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) system from Carl Zeiss Meditec.

The system administers a single radiation dose to the tumor cavity immediately following a lumpectomy in patients who have early-stage localized breast cancer. For patients whose pathologies show clear margins and uninvolved lymph nodes, this treatment eliminates the need to undergo conventional radiotherapy following breast conservation surgery.

Patients are selected for the surgery based on protocols specified in the Targeted Intraoperative Radiotherapy Versus Whole-Breast Radiotherapy for Breast Cancer (TARGIT-A) phase III international trial. The facility decided to offer this treatment as part of its effort to provide personalized cancer care.
