Dilon highlights BSGI study results

Breast-specific gamma imaging (BSGI) developer Dilon Diagnostics is pointing to results of a study that concluded that BSGI can detect cancers missed by mammography and ultrasound.

Researchers found that BSGI had the highest overall sensitivity (91%) for breast cancer detection among 1,042 patients at four institutions -- significantly greater than that of mammography (74%) or ultrasound (84%). BSGI also had a negative predictive value of 96%.

For patients who had adjunctive imaging procedures with results discordant from mammography, BSGI provided higher diagnostic accuracy (77%) than ultrasound (35%).

For the BI-RADS 0 patients, BSGI was significantly more likely to contribute to patient management than ultrasound, was less likely to be negative in cancerous lesions, and was less likely to be positive in benign lesions.

BSGI was performed using the Dilon 6800 high-resolution gamma camera. The study was published in the January issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology. Several of the authors of the study reported financial disclosures regarding Dilon.
