Barco display gets new FDA nod for breast imaging

Image display firm Barco said its flagship Coronis Uniti display has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for interpretation of multiple breast imaging modalities.

The display can now be used with breast tomosynthesis, 3D mammography, breast MRI, and ultrasound (including vascular and gynecological ultrasound), the company said. Previously, the display had been cleared for PACS and mammography imaging only, Barco said.

The FDA clearance allows radiologists to view breast images for a range of modalities in color or grayscale, in 2D or 3D, or as static or dynamic on a single display, eliminating the need to change workstations to complete patient studies, Barco said.

The clearance also enables side-by-side comparisons and image fusion. For example, the combination of ultrasound and mammography in women with dense breasts has led to improved early cancer detection, according to the company.
