ACR, SBI reiterate support for annual mammograms at 40

The American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) are marking National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by emphasizing the lifesaving benefits of annual mammography beginning at age 40.

ACR and SBI are encouraging women to ask their healthcare providers about scheduling an annual mammogram. Annual mammography starting at age 40 saves more lives than screening started at a larger age or with less frequent exams, according to the organizations.

Women 40 and older should have access to mammograms, and Medicare and private insurers should be required to cover them for these exams, ACR and SBI said.
