Cianna advances 2 SAVI Scout studies

Brachytherapy firm Cianna Medical is touting the results of a clinical trial to evaluate its SAVI Scout surgical guidance system for localizing and directing the removal of nonpalpable breast lesions.

In the pilot study, targeted lesions and reflectors were successfully removed surgically in all 50 cases with the aid of SAVI Scout. Final pathology reports showed that 38 (93%) of 41 lumpectomy patients had clear margins. Three patients were recommended for re-excision, which is comparable to reported rates for radioactive seed localization and intraoperative ultrasound. During the study, no reflector migration occurred.

The results are scheduled for presentation this week at the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) annual meeting. A second SAVI Scout trial recently added seven more sites, with the goal of enrolling a total of 150 patients over the next few months.
