Report: Mammography market primed for surge

The mammography systems market in the Americas is expected to grow from approximately $390 million in 2013 to reach $1.1 billion in revenues, according to a report from market research firm GBI Research.

The expansion will be driven primarily by increased adoption of 3D mammography systems in the U.S. and demand for 2D systems in Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, GBI said. In the U.S., revenues from 3D systems will enjoy a 34% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2013 and 2020, climbing from $99.2 million in 2013 to just over $757 million by 2020. However, 2D system sales in the U.S. will drop, with a CAGR of -4% over the study period, and will be overtaken by 3D system sales in 2016, GBI said.

In 2020, the U.S. market for 2D mammography systems will still produce an estimated $168 million in sales, which represents more than the entire mammography market for Canada and Mexico combined, GBI added.

In other predictions, GBI estimated that Canada's mammography systems market will grow from $23.7 million in 2013 to $78.9 million by 2020. Over the same time frame, Mexico's mammography systems market will increase from $14.8 million to $33.3 million, GBI said.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian market is expected to tally approximately $47 million in revenues by 2020, up from $14.9 million in 2013, according to GBI. The high upfront cost of 3D systems, though, will limit adoption of the technology in Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, the firm said.
