Hologic launches 3D breast biopsy device

Women's imaging vendor Hologic has launched a 3D breast biopsy option for use with its Selenia Dimensions 2D and 3D mammography systems.

The biopsy option was developed for Hologic's Affirm upright breast biopsy guidance system, which works with both Selenia Dimensions systems and is also compatible with the firm's Eviva and ATEC (automatic tissue excision and collection) vacuum-assisted breast biopsy devices. The 3D biopsy system is designed for the localization and targeting of regions of interest and is especially important for targeting lesions not always detected in 2D images or when using other modalities, according to the company.

Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in June 2013 became the first facility in the U.S. to perform a tomosynthesis biopsy, according to Hologic.
