Contrast ultrasound clears up picture for renal lesions
September 22, 2017 -- Are you having a hard time classifying a renal lesion on CT, MRI, or conventional ultrasound? Contrast-enhanced ultrasound can be a powerful problem-solving tool for evaluating these indeterminate lesions, according to research published in the September issue of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine.  Discuss
Right heart quantification awareness: Part 4
September 19, 2017 -- The right heart has jokingly been referred to as the organ's stepchild, with little attention paid to its size, function, and prognostic implications. In this column, Andrea Fields of CardioServ reviews the proper methods to quantify the right heart for both size and function on echocardiography.  Discuss
Canadian task force shifts gears on AAA screening
September 11, 2017 -- Ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) may see an uptick in Canada following new guidelines published September 11 by the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care. For the first time, the task force is recommending ultrasound screening, advising a one-time exam for men ages 65 to 80.  Discuss
3D tumor measurements on US spot thyroid cancer growth
August 31, 2017 -- Using 3D ultrasound measurements of tumor volume rather than 2D measurements of diameter could be a better way to determine the aggressiveness of small papillary thyroid cancers -- and to guide active surveillance of tumors, according to an August 31 study in JAMA Otolaryngology -- Head & Neck Surgery.  Discuss
What's the best way to treat extremity pseudoaneurysms?
August 24, 2017 -- Is the off-label use of ultrasound-guided injection of recombinant thrombin for treating extremity pseudoaneurysms safe and effective? Yes, according to a 10-year retrospective analysis published in the August issue of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine.  Discuss
Why is thyroid cancer being overdiagnosed in Canada?
August 22, 2017 -- Despite stable mortality rates over time, the incidence of thyroid cancer has skyrocketed in Canada -- particularly among middle-aged women and in certain provinces. The culprit for this "overdiagnosis epidemic" is diagnostic imaging, according to a study published online in CMAJ Open.  Discuss
USPSTF to take another look at AAA screening
August 11, 2017 -- Will the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) change its recommendations for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening? It's too early to tell, but the task force published a draft research plan on August 10 to share its vision for how it will reassess the benefits and harms of ultrasound screening.  Discuss
How do women fare when breast cancer is detected on US?
August 10, 2017 -- Women whose breast cancers are detected with screening ultrasound generally have good outcomes, but some do experience cancer recurrence. South Korean researchers analyzed the factors that could predict recurrence in these women in a new study in the August issue of Radiology.  Discuss
AI can obviate biopsies of indolent thyroid nodules
August 7, 2017 -- An artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm can characterize thyroid nodules on ultrasound with a high degree of accuracy, potentially helping to avoid unnecessary biopsies of indolent lesions, according to research published online in the Journal of Digital Imaging.
Right heart quantification awareness: Part 3
August 2, 2017 -- The right heart has jokingly been referred to as the organ's stepchild, with little attention paid to its size, function, and prognostic implications. To help with this often overlooked task, this series from CardioServ will review the proper methods to quantify the right heart. Part 3 focuses on the preferred volumetric measurement methods and linear measurements for calculating the size of the right atrium.  Discuss

ACR publishes TI-RADS thyroid nodule classification model

A new risk stratification model for thyroid nodules has been published by the American College of Radiology (ACR) Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) committee. The TI-RADS model is designed to be easy to use by ultrasound practitioners and reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies for thyroid nodules. Read more
