USPSTF recommends against thyroid cancer screening

Updating its previous recommendation from 1996, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has issued a draft recommendation that continues to advise against the use of thyroid cancer screening in asymptomatic adults.

The USPSTF's draft recommendation gives thyroid cancer screening with either neck palpation or ultrasound a D grade, which indicates the task force believes there is moderate or high certainty that the service has no net benefit or that the harms outweigh the benefits.

The draft recommendation can be found on the task force's website. Comments on the draft recommendation will be accepted until December 26 at 8 p.m. EST.
