Clear Guide Medical wins $1.5M in NIH funding

Johns Hopkins University spin-off Clear Guide Medical has received a $1.5 million Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The funding, which will be allocated over a two-year period, will be used to make ultrasound imaging for needle insertions an increasingly widespread tool across a wide range of clinical specialties, according to the firm.

As part of the award, Dr. Paul Bigeleisen from the University of Maryland will test the new device. The grant also includes a subcontract with Allison Okamura, PhD, of Stanford University, whose research focuses on developing the principles and tools needed to realize advanced robotic and human-machine systems capable of haptic (touch) interaction for biomedical applications, Clear Guide Medical said.
