Societies release thoracic aorta imaging guidance

The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) have jointly released new guidance to help clinicians make imaging decisions for detecting thoracic aorta disease in adults.

Published in the February issue of the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, the document proposes primary and secondary choices of imaging modalities for each main category of aortic disease, and it covers the strengths and weaknesses of each option for specific situations, according to ASE. Practical factors such as cost, availability, and exposure to ionizing radiation are also incorporated into the recommendations.

Dr. Steven Goldstein, from Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, served as co-chair of the writing group.
