IBA to build proton center in Poland

Radiopharmaceutical firm Ion Beam Applications (IBA) of Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, has won a contract to build a proton therapy center in Krakow, Poland.

IBA will supply a cyclotron and other technology to the Henryk Niewodniczanski Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Science (IFJ), which is building the Bronowice Cyclotron Center. The center will include one fixed-beam treatment room and one research room.

The project is the first stage of the Polish National Centre for Hadron Radiotherapy (NCRH), and the value of the contract -- including cyclotron, technical equipment, and building construction -- is valued between 25 million and 30 million euros ($32.9 million and $39.5 million).

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients
