Interventional radiology technology developer Surefire Medical is highlighting a study presented on Wednesday at the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) meeting in San Diego.
The Coiling vs. Surefire Infusion System in Y90 (COSY) clinical trial showed significant reductions in fluoroscopy time, procedure time, and contrast dose when selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) planning was performed using the Surefire system without coiling, according to the vendor. The Surefire system features an expandable tip designed to minimize reflux and maximize direct-to-tumor delivery of cancer-fighting agents, Surefire said.
The randomized, prospective study investigated the feasibility and benefits of performing SIRT planning without the need to place permanent coils. Procedure time was reduced by more than 50% and radiation dose to both the patient and operator was lowered by 50%, principal investigator Dr. Aaron Fischman, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, said in a statement.
In addition, fluoroscopy time was reduced by 70% and contrast use was cut in half, the researchers reported. There were no minor or major adverse events at 30-day follow-up among the 15 patients who underwent procedures using the Surefire system.
Coiling can be eliminated or minimized with the use of the Surefire infusion system, the researchers concluded.
