Healthcare IT firm MedInformatix has been selected to take part in a healthcare industry effort to create a blueprint to automate the patient intake process, including the collection of health insurance and demographic information.
The Health Benefits and Health Record Mobile Solution, or "Virtual Clipboard" for short, is being launched after a recently convened summit in Washington, DC, of healthcare and healthcare IT executives that addressed how to use technologies to improve the efficiency of the U.S. healthcare system, enhance the quality of care, and empower consumers.
The Virtual Clipboard initiative aims to improve the patient intake experience and create an administrative workflow whereby patients are processed more smoothly and practices operate more efficiently, MedInformatix said.
Working groups are already developing systems via a Virtual Clipboard pilot program. It is hoped that once it's available in the marketplace, the Virtual Clipboard could replace paper documents, medication reconciliation, and insurance card photocopying, MedInformatix added. The Virtual Clipboard will include both mobile and portal applications.
The proceedings were organized in part by the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI), a public-private coalition of industry healthcare executives who advise the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on policies and industry trends. Also involved were officials from the Sullivan Institute for Healthcare Innovation, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), and representatives from major health plans, providers, healthcare IT vendors, and government entities.
