Varian updates Velocity oncology software

Radiation oncology firm Varian Medical Systems has released an updated version of its Velocity oncology software.

The updated software offers new tools that facilitate the use of diverse types of images and automates image processing procedures. It can calculate the probable impact of different doses of radiation on tumors and normal tissues, automate several image handling processes, and be used to communicate and collaborate with colleagues.

Velocity is designed to access and aggregate unstructured treatment and imaging data from diverse systems to show a comprehensive view of a patient's diagnostic imaging and treatment history, regardless of where patients were treated or what technology was used, Varian said. The software also allows healthcare professionals to use oncology patient images and data to plan and assess treatments, collaborate with colleagues, and share clinical knowledge.

Varian acquired the software when it purchased the assets of Velocity Medical Solutions last month. Varian said it plans to showcase the software at the upcoming annual meetings of the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD) and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
