The Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance (MITA) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) have praised the completion and approval of a manufacturer disclosure statement.
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Codes and Standards Committee has completed the Manufacturer Disclosure Statement for Medical Device Security (MDS2) - 2013, which enables a more comprehensive identification and analysis of specific aspects of critical security issues, according to MITA.
MDS2 - 2013 is a revision of the 2008 version. It was developed by MITA and members of the HIMSS Medical Device Security Task Force, in collaboration with multiple industry associations, government agencies, and other stakeholders. MDS2 addresses the following:
- Specifies a device manufacturer's model-specific description of a device's ability to maintain/transmit electronic protected health information (ePHI) and the security features associated with the device
- Aids the healthcare provider's review and analysis of the large volume of security-related information supplied by manufacturers for medical devices installed on the provider's premises
MDS2 - 2013 is now closely aligned with International Electrochemical Commission (IEC) Standard 80001-1 supplement IEC/TR 80001-2-2, "Guidance for the communication of medical device security needs, risks, and controls," and is therefore more attuned to international standards on medical device security, according to MITA.
