Children's Hospital Boston achieves HIMSS milestone

HIMSS Analytics of Chicago has announced that Children's Hospital Boston has achieved stage 7 of the HIMSS Analytics electronic medical record (EMR) adoption program.

The hospital joins Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and Children's Medical Center of Dallas in achieving the highest level of electronic health record adoption by children's hospitals. As of November 2010, a total of 52 hospitals have received the HIMSS Analytics stage 7 award, or 1% of the more than 5,000 hospitals in its database.

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and effect of EMR systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics database. Tracking their progress in completing eight stages (0-7), hospitals can review the implementation and use of IT applications with the intent of reaching stage 7, which represents an advanced patient record environment.

The validation process that confirms a hospital has reached stage 7 includes a site visit conducted by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers.

An additional seven children's hospitals in the U.S. are currently at HIMSS Analytics stage 6 status.
