RBMA backs proposed PACS workstation cost

The Radiology Business Management Association (RBMA) said it supports the recent proposed increase in the cost estimate for a PACS workstation.

In the proposed 2016 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule released earlier this month, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed raising its estimate from $2,501 to $5,557.

CMS had originally based the PACS workstation value on the cost of a desktop computer, RBMA said. The revised $5,557 amount is based on actual invoices submitted to CMS, according to the organization.

"The RBMA had consistently held that the $2,501 amount was inappropriate because a desktop computer is not equivalent to a PACS workstation, which is a more complex and expensive system," said Liz Quam, who chairs RBMA's Federal Affairs Committee. The complete statement is available by -->
