NEMA updates SAR standards for MRI

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has revised its standards for the specific absorption rate (SAR) for MRI scans to accommodate higher-field systems, larger bore sizes, and new sensor technologies.

The details are in the newly published NEMA MS 8-2016: "Characterization of the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Systems."

The guidelines are designed for equipment manufacturers, prospective purchasers, and users to measure performance parameters related to the safety of MRI scanners and technologies.

NEMA's MS 8-2016 is available in hard-copy format for $87 and as an electronic download at no cost on the NEMA website.
