3DIcon seeks NIH funding for MRI interface

3D projection display firm 3DIcon has filed a request for funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop 3D volumetric display technology.

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant would be used to demonstrate the feasibility of an interface between an MRI scanner and a 3D volumetric display. The researchers are interested in mapping the brain activity of patients in response to time-varying stimuli, the company said.

3DIcon would utilize technology to reduce the amount of processing required by the interface and would therefore reduce rendering time for functional MRI applications.

3DIcon proposed a six-month, $150,000 project, which could lead to a follow-up 24-month phase II award of $1 million, if successful.
