Cleveland Clinic to study boxers' brains

The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health has signed an agreement to provide neurological assessments to support professional boxers.

In turn, boxing promoter Haymon Boxing has agreed to make a significant commitment to the Cleveland Clinic for use by the center in the Professional Fighters Brain Health Study. The study launched in April 2011 and so far has voluntarily enrolled nearly 500 active and retired fighters.

In the study, fighters receive free, ongoing brain health and function assessments, including MRI exams. Individual tests will be repeated each year for at least four years, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
