MR safety advocates create certification body

MRI safety advocates have launched the American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS), which will certify healthcare professionals on MR safety compliance.

ABMRS said it will create and standardize testing and certification for MR safety competence for individuals responsible for ensuring the safety of MR clinical and research environments. Certification categories include the positions and titles of MR medical director/physician (MRMD), MR safety officer (MRSO), and MR safety expert (MRSE), according to the board.

The ABMRS leadership includes the following:

  • Chair: Dr. Emanuel Kanal, director of MR services at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
  • Vice chair: Max Amurao, PhD, director of radiation safety for clinical programs at Columbia University/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital
  • Secretary/treasurer: Tobias Gilk, senior vice president of Radiology-Planning and founder of Gilk Radiology Consulting
