ECRI debuts MRI user experience ratings

Nonprofit research organization ECRI Institute has unveiled user experience ratings on MRI systems.

The institute's SelectPlus User Experience Network recently polled hundreds of MRI system users on criteria such as image quality, coil selection and setup, ease of use, patient throughput, and vender support. The survey results include function, feature, and service ratings for each MRI scanner model, grouped by vendor to indicate how each firm's product lines fare in each category, according to ECRI.

The survey revealed that four vendors -- GE Healthcare, Philips Healthcare, Siemens Healthcare, and Toshiba America Medical Systems -- dominate the market among ECRI Institute members. Average quoted pricing for some of the most popular systems show that MRI costs range from $2 million to $2.5 million for 3-tesla scanners and $1.3 million to $1.6 million for 1.5-tesla systems.
