SNMMI opposes proposed changes in tech duties

The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) is asking its members to contact the Joint Commission to object to proposed changes regarding which tasks technologists can perform.

On September 3, the Joint Commission proposed that technologists certified by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) be removed from the list of staff qualified to perform standalone diagnostic CT scans.

SNMMI asserts that nuclear medicine technologists with additional training are as least as competent as radiologic technologists to perform diagnostic CT exams, since they have to pass the NMTCB's nuclear medicine certification exam for CT competency.

The organization also said that the Joint Commission's proposal could block technologists from performing SPECT/CT and PET/CT.

SNMMI is asking members to fill out a survey issued by the Joint Commission. The deadline to submit comments for the Proposed Revisions to Diagnostic Imaging Services is October 24.
