Siemens wins appeal in Saint-Gobain patent suit

A patent dispute between Siemens Healthcare and Saint-Gobain Ceramics & Plastics has concluded following a U.S. Supreme Court decision to confirm a recent U.S. federal court ruling in favor of Siemens.

Siemens said it was pleased with the Supreme Court's decision, which left undisturbed the February 24 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, DC. That ruling had affirmed a 2008 district court decision that stated Saint-Gobain had infringed on a Siemens patent for lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) crystal technology used in its PET scanners.

Siemens initially filed the suit in 2007, alleging that Saint-Gobain sold the LSO crystal technology to Philips Healthcare, which was used in 61 Philips PET/CT systems.
