Zecotek files patent suit against Philips

Nuclear medicine firm Zecotek Photonics announced that its subsidiary, Zecotek Imaging Systems, has initiated legal action in U.S. Federal District Court in Los Angeles against Saint-Gobain and Philips Healthcare for infringing on one of Zecotek's patents.

Zecotek's U.S. Patent No. 7,132,060 covers the substances and chemical formulations used to grow lutetium fine silicate (LFS) scintillation crystals, which are characterized by their combined high light yield and ultrafast decay times and are typically used in medical scanning devices, Zecotek said. The lawsuit alleges that Saint-Gobain's LFS crystals infringe on Zecotek's patent, and that Philips infringes by using those crystals in the PET scanners it sells.

Zecotek is being represented by Thomas Loop, of the law firm Graybeal Jackson, and Justin Nelson, of the law firm Susman Godfrey, the company said.
