For sale: AECL nuke research labs

Canada's government is mulling whether to sell Atomic Energy of Canada's (AECL) nuclear research labs.

According to a report by CTV News, the government is looking for companies to invest in and manage the labs as a way to reduce its contributions to AECL.

Following the government's sale of the Candu nuclear reactor business to SNC-Lavalin, the focus has been on AECL's nuclear laboratories division, which, according to CTV, has more than 3,000 employees, primarily in Chalk River, Ontario, and Pinawa, Manitoba.

The report also noted that AECL's nuclear liabilities are estimated at approximately $5.4 billion (U.S.), which includes decommissioning facilities and dealing with buried and stored waste.
