Cardinal launches LEU radiopharma initiative

Cardinal Health has launched an initiative to help customers better understand and participate in a recently signed federal policy that encourages the use of radioactive imaging agents that are produced with low-enriched uranium (LEU).

Most radioactive imaging agents currently used in the U.S. are produced using highly enriched uranium; however, as part of a multinational effort to reduce the use of this material, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently introduced a new policy to encourage hospitals to transition to the use of imaging agents produced with low-enriched uranium, according to Cardinal Health.

The company said the program will help its clients understand the reimbursement effects of using low-enriched uranium sources and to whom the CMS policy applies, in addition to helping them change the way imaging procedures are scheduled to make the most of the existing LEU supply.
