More than 2K Canadian imaging exams to be reviewed

More than 2,300 diagnostic imaging exams taken at a hospital in Canada's Northwest Territories will be reviewed due to concerns about inaccuracies in interpretation, according to the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA).

The 2,355 exams to be reviewed were initially read by a locum radiologist who worked at Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife from December 2015 to January 2016, with another employment stint in May 2016. The exams include CT scans, ultrasound studies, x-rays, and mammograms, and represent a total of 1,491 patients, the NTHSSA said.

Patients will only be contacted if their exam was read inaccurately, according to the agency, and those with exams that include errors will be provided with information on how to receive appropriate care and services.

"The review does not mean that all of the original exams in question are inaccurate or incomplete," the NTHSSA said in a statement. "It also does not mean that the review will result in negative clinical concern or impacts to the individuals examined."
