AMA supports interstate licensure compact

The American Medical Association (AMA) said it supports the interstate medical compact developed by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) to streamline the process for physicians to obtain licenses in multiple states.

The compact aims to reduce barriers to this licensure process, make medical licenses more portable, and support the growth of telemedicine while expanding access to healthcare, according to FSMB.

AMA said it would work with medical associations, FSMB, and other interested stakeholders to ensure expeditious adoption of the compact and the creation of an Interstate Medical Licensure Commission. At least 10 state medical boards have already adopted the compact, Dr. Steven Stack, AMA's president-elect, said in a statement.
