RSNA foundation to award $4M in grants

The RSNA Research and Education (R&E) Foundation said it will fund $4 million in grants in 2017 -- the second year in a row it has reached the $4 million mark.

The grants will go to recipients from 50 institutions in North America and abroad, a group that includes Research Seed Grant recipients from the Netherlands and Hong Kong and an Education Scholar Grant recipient from Nigeria. The foundation funded 30% of grant applications this year, which is about three times the rate of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to the RSNA.

The foundation is the largest funding organization in radiology, awarding $55 million for more than 1,300 projects since 1984, the RSNA said. At the same time, grant applications have doubled over the past five years.

The RSNA said these grants also serve as pathways to greater funding: Every dollar awarded by the foundation results in more than $40 of additional funding received as a principal or co-investigator by other sources, including the NIH.
