Univ. at Buffalo revives radiology residency program

The University at Buffalo is reviving its radiology residency program, which has been shuttered since closing in 2006.

The university announced that 35 practicing radiologists employed by Great Lakes Medical Imaging will join the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences as full-time radiology faculty members.

The new arrangement allows the university's Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to re-establish its residency program in radiology. The original residency program withdrew from the national accreditation process conducted by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in 2006.

The new faculty radiologists will provide care to the community as clinicians with the University of Buffalo department of radiology and its hospital partners in the Great Lakes Health System, the university said.

Great Lakes co-founder and former president Dr. Kenneth Pearsen will serve as president of the university's radiology department. Dr. Angelo DelBalso, who served as chair of the university's radiology department, has returned to the faculty full-time.

The need to re-establish a medical residency training program in western New York was a key motivator for the new arrangement, Pearsen said in a statement.

Under the plan, Great Lakes will also continue to provide radiology services to Buffalo General Medical Center. The new agreement makes the university's radiology department the sole provider of radiology services at Erie County Medical Center, the two entities said.
