ASRT launches new museum

The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) has opened a new museum in Albuquerque, NM, devoted to collecting, preserving, and sharing the radiologic technology profession's history.

Ensconced in a 4,500-sq-ft space, the museum highlights the high-tech nature of medical imaging and radiation therapy using touch tables, video screens, and hands-on exhibits, ASRT said. It also features pieces of vintage equipment, including a Picker fluoroscopy device, a 1935 GE portable "suitcase model" x-ray unit, and a military field x-ray unit from World War II, as well as more than 300 artifacts.

Finally, the museum honors some of the profession's pioneers, including Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, the physicist who discovered the x-ray in 1895; two-time Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie, who conducted research on radioactivity; and Ed Jerman, founder of the American Association of Radiological Technicians, the precursor to ASRT, the organization said.
