Global summit confronts radiation issues worldwide

The first Global Summit on Radiological Quality and Safety (GSRQS), held in Washington, DC, from May 9 to 11, gathered imaging experts from around the world for a series of working sessions on best practices and strategies.

Participants in the meeting, which was sponsored by the American College of Radiology (ACR), the European Society of Radiology (ESR), and the International Society of Radiology (ISR), emphasized the importance of making dose optimization and appropriate-use criteria global priorities.

Participants also included the Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance (MITA); the European Coordination Committee of the Radiological, Electromedical, and Healthcare IT Industry (COCIR); and the Global Diagnostic Imaging, Healthcare IT, and Radiation Therapy Trade Association (DITTA).

The summit itself is a testament to the high prioritization of quality and safety in medical imaging, said MITA. The organization urged continued joint efforts with international industry partners to ensure the universal adoption of best practices and quality initiatives that can be harmonized and jointly promoted internationally.

The groups said they are dedicated to enhancing patient safety by reducing radiation dose, while maintaining and even improving image quality, through new safety standards and initiatives. They support a continued partnership with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to develop and implement radiation safety features and user information.
