CMS proposes hike in cardiac PET reimbursement

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed an increase in reimbursement in 2008 for cardiac PET imaging.

The proposed rule would assign all cardiac PET CPT codes to APC 0307 -- Myocardial Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging -- with a new payment rate of $2,711.25.

CMS also proposes to reassign the PET/CT codes from APC 1511 -- New Technology-Level XI to APC 0308 -- Non-Myocardial Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging. All non-cardiac PET CPT codes would be assigned to a single APC 0308 with a new payment rate of $1,107.22.

The proposed rule is expected to be published in the Federal Register later this month. If approved, changes would become effective on January 1, 2008.
