Interventional technology firm Medtronic of Minneapolis has entered into an agreement with Axon Systems, a private developer of neuromonitoring technology used during spinal surgery.
Under terms of the deal, Medtronic and Axon will bring to market the next generation of neuromonitoring technology, and will expand its availability. Partnering with Axon will immediately expand Medtronic's spinal neuromonitoring product line by giving it rights to sell the NIM-Eclipse spinal system, according to the company.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared NIM-Eclipse in May 2006. The device allows for as many as 32 channels of simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG), evoked potentials (EP), and electromyography (EMG) monitoring. It also allows physicians to monitor a patient's critical neural pathways during spinal surgery, which can help prevent postoperative neurological deficits.
