As of 2001, there were 5,550 sites performing MRI procedures, including 4,000 with a fixed MRI scanner onsite, and 1,685 sites using an MRI scanner that visits the site in a mobile van.

The majority of mobile MRI users are small <200 bed hospitals (81%), while 9% of the mobile users are 200-399 bed hospitals, 2% are 400+ bed hospitals, and 8% are nonhospital sites.
