Fischer cleared for interstitial breast brachytherapy

Fischer Imaging has received FDA clearance to use its MammoTest digital breast biopsy system for interstitial breast brachytherapy.

Interstitial brachytherapy is a less-invasive, four-day alternative to the traditional six-week external-beam radiation therapy for breast tumors, according to the Denver-based firm. While traditional radiation therapy irradiates the entire breast, brachytherapy uses x-ray guidance, such as provided by the MammoTest system, to insert catheters for irradiation of the tissue within 2 cm of a lumpectomy site.
