Radiation oncology firm Nucletron is developing a new electronic brachytherapy technique using miniature x-ray technology.
The company's electronic brachytherapy technique uses miniature x-ray tubes to deliver nonradioactive and isotope-free radiation treatment to cancer sites.
The Veenendaal, Netherlands-based company noted that this type of localized radiation treatment delivers the radiation source directly to the tumor site, similar to isotope-based brachytherapy, and minimizes damage to healthy surrounding organs and tissue.
Nucletron expects the technique to be used initially in the treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers.
A prototype may be available for demonstration in September at the 2008 American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting, with clinical testing in 2009.
