Brachytherapy device developer Xoft announced that Dr. Mark Carol, the company's medical director, has been awarded the Ira Sohn Conference Foundation Prize in Pediatric Oncology for research on new approaches for using kV x-ray-based radiation therapy for cancer patients.
The $250,000 prize is part of the Gotham Prize for Cancer Research, which was established to encourage new approaches to cancer research.
Carol used the Xoft's Axxent electronic brachytherapy system in the research that won the award, according to the Sunnyvale, CA-based company. Axxent delivers localized, nonradioactive isotope-free radiation treatment, according to Sunnyvale, Xoft said.
