Report: Storage, SR to pace imaging IT

The greatest level of U.S. imaging IT investment over the next few years will come from imaging archive/storage and speech recognition technology rather than replacement PACS sales, according to a report from research firm CapSite.

The U.S. PACS market is in a replacement phase with approximately 96% of hospitals already having purchased a PACS, according to CapSite parent Fletcher/CSI of Williston, VT. Approximately 80% of PACS that are currently installed in larger institutions that produce more than 120,000 exams per year were purchased prior to 2007.

CapSite expects PACS replacement purchasing activity to pick up once provider organizations begin to achieve meaningful use requirements for their electronic health records.
