Florida, DoD to develop HIT exchange

The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) and the Military Health System of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) have agreed to develop a pilot health information exchange (HIN) between military and private healthcare providers using the Tampa Bay regional health information organization (RHIO).

The purpose of the initiative is for the state and federal government to create a mechanism to share and exchange personal health information and data. Through the HIN, healthcare providers who treat current and former military personnel and their families will have an opportunity to electronically access and exchange personal health information about their patients held by the DoD.

When fully implemented, the HIN will improve providers' ability to access and share information that may be used to treat uniformed and retired personnel at DoD and nonmilitary locations within the state of Florida, according to AHCA.
