Study: PACS shows strong growth

PACS adoption has increased sharply since 2000, with 76% of U.S. hospitals reporting the use of PACS to manage images from at least one modality, compared to an adoption level of 8.5% at the turn of the decade, according to a new report.

The finding comes from a new study by the Dorenfest Institute for Health Information of Chicago, managed by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Foundation. The free white paper explores PACS technology and its growth in the U.S. healthcare industry. The study uses data gathered from the databases of the Dorenfest Institute and HIMSS Analytics.

The report also found that the number of vendors marketing PACS software increased from 53 to 68 from 2000 through 2008. The top 10 vendors in the PACS market provided more than 80% of PACS in 2008.
