Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) could return its National Research Universal (NRU) reactor in Chalk River, Ontario, to service as soon as next week.
AECL has completed the replacement and testing of monitoring equipment at the facility, which produces approximately half of the molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) supply for North America. In addition, tests on the main heavy water system and return-to-service activities for all 35 NRU auxiliary systems are finished.
Over the next several days, the return-to-service team will be completing final restart preparation and bringing the reactor back into service with low-power testing before proceeding to high-power operation.
