Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) has successfully completed the replacement and testing of monitoring equipment at its National Research Universal (NRU) reactor in Chalk River, Ontario.
AECL now has completed four assessments to verify fueling calculations and the refueling of the nuclear reactor. Workers currently are conducting tests on the main heavy water system to verify system performance. The tests are expected to conclude over the next several days.
If all goes well, AECL plans to resume production of the medical isotope molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) by the middle of this month. The NRU reactor produces approximately half of the Mo-99 supply for North America.
