PET market continues double-digit growth

The demand for PET continued to grow in 2005, reaching 1.2 million procedures, an increase of 24% for the year. Procedure volume should increase 31% in 2006, according to a recent study by market research firm Bio-Tech Systems.

The Las Vegas-based company predicted that by 2012, PET procedure volume should rise to 4.4 million procedures annually. The firm attributed the growth to the approval of new indications in oncology have added to procedure volume, as well as expanded use of PET in lung cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, lymphoma, and melanoma. Cardiology studies, in particular rubidium PET studies for myocardial perfusion, will contribute to procedure growth, as will neurology studies.

Bio-Tech said that the growth of PET procedures volume has stimulated sales of FDG, while reducing the cost per dose. It said FDG sales of $259 million in 2005 will increase 31% in 2006 to $340 million, and the firm predicts FDG sales will reach $933 million by 2012 on the basis of current utilization trends.

In 2005, there were 326 PET scanners sold in the U.S. and 608 systems worldwide, representing sales of $534.9 million in the U.S. and worldwide sales of $985.5 million; this represents increases of 13% and 15.8%, respectively, over the prior year. The research company noted that U.S. and international users have adopted PET-CT very rapidly, with hybrid systems comprising about 95% of total billings in 2005.

Bio-Tech said it anticipates that by 2012, U.S. bookings will increase to 550 units with sales of $907.5 million, while worldwide bookings will reach 1,095 units and $1.8 billion in sales volume. The proportion of international PET sales will continue to rise, from 45% in 2005 to 50% or higher by 2012, according to the firm.
