CMS proposes 2011 inpatient payment rates

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a proposed rule for 2011 payment rates of hospital-provided inpatient services.

CMS proposes to increase inpatient acute care hospital rates under the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) by 2.4%, slightly up from the 2.1% hike in 2010. But the agency is also proposing a reduction in payment rates by a documentation and coding adjustment of 2.9%. Combining these and other factors, CMS estimates that hospital inpatient payments will decrease by 0.1%, or $142 million, in 2011.
