The MRSA Survivors Network has designated October as MRSA Awareness Month.
MRSA -- methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus -- is a staph infection that can be contracted from exposure to contaminated surfaces in hospitals. MRSA has been found on radiology equipment such as MRI and x-ray systems.
Jeanine Thomas, founder of MRSA Survivors Network, said the goal is to raise public awareness in the hope that patients will demand aggressive and immediate action by world health organizations and governments to prevent the disease.
Thomas is a survivor of sepsis and MRSA and Clostridium difficile infection. She became critically ill and nearly died after ankle surgery.
The campaign begins with the first inaugural World MRSA Day Kickoff on October 1 at Loyola University in Chicago to remember victims of MRSA.
