ACR aims to become Medicare accrediting body

The American College of Radiology (ACR) said it will complete the process to become a "deemed accrediting body" for Medicare.

The Reston, VA-based organization said it would work with the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to provide the accreditation services required by the recently passed Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008.

The law mandates that imaging providers be accredited by January 1, 2012, to receive reimbursement for MRI, CT, PET, and nuclear medicine procedures.
